Jade 02:40
Car sitting in the backyard Being eaten by some weeds the neighbor kids like to climb up on when they think that I can't see No time to scold, gotta hit the road there's a sweetheart waiting up north A name like jade she caught my game and whispered with a force Stay as long as you like make yourself at home I know this place aint even mine but you can treat it like you own nothing stays the same I know but, hell, this is pretty close when where you're from starts to feel like weight you know where to go

You've always had such a way with words it knocks me to my knees walks me down to the garden's edge spills me down the street Well it's easy to ignore all those things you've seen before time and time again but if we would take a moment stay honest, stay open then you'll be here and I'll be here my friend Well, a wandering mind is a hard thing to unwind it's hard to commit but you never seem to balk or to blink so I just lace up and run with Well, it's easy to ignore all those things you've seen before time and time again but if we would take a moment stay honest, stay open then you'll be here and I'll be here my friend

about

I knew it was just a matter of time before my gigs got canceled at Amangiri and I'm thankful that I was able to play a few more shows than most.

My plan is to release new music every Friday until I get my gigs back.

"Jade" was written when I first moved to Page, the house I was living in had these beat-to-shit jet skis in the backyard that the neighbors' kids would climb on when they got out of school. I was writing everyday and just grabbed bits and pieces of other ideas for the first verse - Willy Vlautin's Northline came to mind.

I wrote the second verse for another vocalist, nobody in particular, just a different voice to respond to the first going "up north" with a welcome and invitation to "make yourself at home".

"You'll Be Here" was the first tune I wrote after leaving Reno. Initially I heard it as something swaggering and robust and soulful, like Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help", that's why I sit on the one for a bit before the vocals come in. The idea to just have a bunch of guitars snaking their way through the makeshift chorus came from the vocals and feel of Nai Palm's version of "Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland)"

I was thinking about my friends Zach and Will when I started messing with lyrics. Being in a conversation with them is intimidating; they're intelligent, opinionated, quick... and they know it. That's where the "You've always had such a way with words" bit came from. From missing their bullshit. The rest of the tune was just... autopilot singer-songwriter lyrics.

I recorded the acoustic guitar and main vocals straight into my phone when I woke up then added guitars later in the day. Then I ran the audio from my phone through an old Tascam 4 track portastudio that I bought with fantasy football winnings when I was 16 or so. I didn't like how sterile the tracks sounded all stacked up on GarageBand and thought running it through the tape machine would fix my problem, listening now it feels like I over corrected. Whatever.

about

Spencer Kilpatrick Big Water, Utah

The Utah-based singer-songwriter has an amazing, even intoxicating handle on pitch-perfect period strut, and a smoky, emotion-damaged croon that accents and accentuates it perfectly. While his voice sounds like a cross-hatching of a bluesy John Mayer and Bill Withers, his solo work, which has dribbled out online in fervent spasms, has called to mind contemporaries like Amos Lee.” - Justin Vellucci ... more
