I was in Reno last week and got the opportunity to spend time with some friends and make a couple little songs.

Feels good to be halfway through this self imposed song-a-week challenge. I’m grateful to know so many folks who are excited to make music so spontaneously.

Each of these tunes was written in 20-30 minutes while hanging with friends on consecutive nights back in Reno - Saturday night I returned an amp I borrowed from Luke, tracked some lead guitar for the new Happy Trails album, then set to writing “On To You”, I wanted a paint-by-numbers soul tune but was excited by the changes in the chorus (D - C#7 - Bm - Bm/E), they felt interesting/fresh. I wrote the first verse and Dani wrote a lot of the second.

The next night, Dani and I were in Portola when Seth Burns came to visit. I set out to write a campfire song and Seth mentioned something about his dog being in our way. I built the tune around that line “In my way”. Again, Dani wrote out the second verse and I tweaked it.

While neither of these songs are well recorded, the process with which I wrote them embodies why I set out to write/record a song a week through 2022; I wanted to create recklessly and light-heartedly. I wanted to acquaint myself with the value of a finished song when I wasn’t able to write a good one.
