about

Week 11

Recorded this in June of last year. Didn’t like it much then but… I like it. It’s fine.

When I set out to do this song-a-week thing, this is around the time I was expecting to lose steam and I am. But there’s still excitement for new material. Excitement and pride in the discipline it takes to write, record, or even just release new stuff every week. I haven’t burned through all my old material yet, and I’ve created things I wouldn’t have without the self imposed deadline.

I’m grateful for the 10-12 of you that have been listening to this shit each week. If you’re ever in southern Utah, come on by.

lyrics

It’s getting colder by the minute
Summer melted me away
Lakeside naps and harmless yearning
Turned to heavy winter weight and
the toll of getting older
The toll I took on you

I’m sending postcards, letters, flowers
expecting warmer weather way too soon

It’s getting harder not to call you
Your voice is poised to run
The sun is leaving sooner
Than you used to just for fun
My eyelids drop like snowpack
thinking bout the toll on you

I’m sending poorly worded emails
Expecting warmer weather way too soon

Thinking bout long days and long shadows
It was a long wait for things to unravel
Thinking bout long days and long shadows

Expecting warmer weather way too soon

Spencer Kilpatrick Big Water, Utah

The Utah-based singer-songwriter has an amazing, even intoxicating handle on pitch-perfect period strut, and a smoky, emotion-damaged croon that accents and accentuates it perfectly. While his voice sounds like a cross-hatching of a bluesy John Mayer and Bill Withers, his solo work, which has dribbled out online in fervent spasms, has called to mind contemporaries like Amos Lee.” - Justin Vellucci ... more
