Week 8

I missed last week, I’ll make it up somewhere along the line. Last Friday I flew to Sacramento and recorded some songs that Evan Bailey (Sun Valley Gun Club and Oh Lonesome Ana) and I wrote - last year he came down this was and wrote the chords and melodies for 5 songs based on a series of poems I’d written. We sent voice memos back and forth shaping the tunes into a deeply personal amalgam of both our styles. He put a band together and booked us 2 days at The Atomic Garden in Oakland (one for tracking, one for mixing) and we knocked out all 5.

We got the masters yesterday and they’re cool; they breath. Let me know if you’d like to hear a couple of them or read the poems or anything and I’ll text them to you.

Hope you’re all well.

I really like this song. It’s about Reno and Ivan and Dani and drinking.

lyrics

I need a cold one
I need a great big bottle of wine
seems like forever
can feel a lot like forever every once in a while

It’s all in my shoulders
I carry silver in the small of my back
you’ll get a call when it’s over
just walk down to the Truckee
Ivan, try to relax

Hey hey
Bye bye
Hey hey
I’ll see ya sometime

It doesn’t matter
if you’re still drinkin or shrinkin away
put it all in a blender
remember everyone thinks about it
more than they say

They say they’re good, they’re cool, they’re great
but me, I’m down at the Nev and I can’t see straight
No matter the order
she’s got a kneecap that’s made out of quarters
I seen it, I mean
I seen it, I mean it, now now
I seen it, I mean it
I seen it, I mean, now now

Hey hey
Bye bye
Hey hey
I’ll see ya sometime

about

Spencer Kilpatrick Big Water, Utah

The Utah-based singer-songwriter has an amazing, even intoxicating handle on pitch-perfect period strut, and a smoky, emotion-damaged croon that accents and accentuates it perfectly. While his voice sounds like a cross-hatching of a bluesy John Mayer and Bill Withers, his solo work, which has dribbled out online in fervent spasms, has called to mind contemporaries like Amos Lee.” - Justin Vellucci ... more
