about

This has been floating around since MELK days. Windy Mesa House Band opened with it on our last tour as well. I’d never recorded a proper demo of it and even with the maybe overwhelming tape-iness of it, I still find a lot to like in here - the bridge section specifically kind of feels like a Zeppelin tune. I like the double distorted/fuzz guitars. Maybe I’ll release the version that didn’t get run through the Tascam one day. Still experimenting.

I’m still conflicted about running shit through the Tascam MF-P01 at all. I like how it compresses, I like the tape distortion, I like the feel… but dirtying up a higher fidelity recording feels a little corny; like putting a filter on a picture. The version pre-tape has its own set of issues that stem from my incompetence and I sometimes look at running the song through the tape machine as intentionalizing it’s sonic flaws as opposed to surrendering to my own limitations.

I don’t know. I’m figuring it out. All this shit will likely be recorded in one shot with a good band at a real studio sometime next year anyway.

Hopefully at least.

While his voice sounds like a cross-hatching of a bluesy John Mayer and Bill Withers, his solo work, which has dribbled out online in fervent spasms, has called to mind contemporaries like Amos Lee.” - Justin Vellucci ... more
