about

Recorded this at Naked City Audio in Vegas.

It’s funny what happens to songs when you bring them out of your head, and then again when you bring them out of your house and into a studio with other folks to put their fingerprints on.

I listen to this and my first instinct is to consider the mix and what elements I’d cut or add. But with the amount of music I’ve made this year, it feels a lot more fulfilling to consider this a snapshot of the friends in the studio, the engineers I met at Naked City Audio, and the energy in the room. When thinking about it from that angle it feels silly to be protective of a song; a song that can be re-recorded as many times as I’d like; a song that, at its core, maybe isn’t that good to begin with.

“Barebones” started as one of those self-assignments when, after some indeterminate amount of time, you get a little restless and frustrated internally and start thinking “well shit, if I’m gonna think of myself as a songwriter, I should probably write a couple fuckin songs once in a while” - it came together quickly at my kitchen table in Page while listening to the neighbor kids call out for their dog Tuesday.

*note: this is a mix that will eventually be replaced with a master from NCA.

lyrics

Barebones
Tear me down to the studs
Wake me up when the jasper turns to rust

Where we goin?
Tuesday’s on the run
Red dirt flying, bleeding just for fun

Can you believe it?
Can you believe our day has come?
Let’s meet our maker
Find out what he made us from

God damn
I been getting out of line
Old habits die hard but my new ones are doing fine

How does one hand
tie itself so tight?
Must’ve had some help or ran to Phoenix for the night

Can you believe it?
Can you believe our day has come?
Let’s meet our maker
Find out what he made us from

about

Spencer Kilpatrick Big Water, Utah

The Utah-based singer-songwriter has an amazing, even intoxicating handle on pitch-perfect period strut, and a smoky, emotion-damaged croon that accents and accentuates it perfectly. While his voice sounds like a cross-hatching of a bluesy John Mayer and Bill Withers, his solo work, which has dribbled out online in fervent spasms, has called to mind contemporaries like Amos Lee.” - Justin Vellucci ... more
