Dear Carolyn

Dear Carolyn 03:36
Dear Carolyn, I've been meaning to call you but we're still barrellin' towards the next city. I've got Clint and Zac and all of 'em with me and we're all crammed into the silver bullet - you know I'm no good at driving so I'm in the back crushing silver bullets. And dear Carolyn, the way you look me in my eyes makes me nervous, and I'm damn sure it's not the first time you heard this and I'm damn sure it's not the last time either. Do you still work at that daycare on Ralston? Do you still fuckin hate it there with all those bosses? Do you still make your ramen with scrambled eggs in it or are we a little too old for that shit now? We've come a long way from Elko... and I've come a long way from saying hell no to a full time job, and casino gigs on the weekend, and being friends with people who aren't in bands anymore. And when I really think about it, it doesn't bother me that you're still a Packers fan. Got me singin "oooh oooh oooh," I could never lose a stitch of what I learned from you X2

about

There are two songwriters that I really tried to write like when it came to the lyrics for this song - Eric Smith from Joan and The Rivers and Keith Damron from El Camino Sutra. They've both always done terrific jobs of making small, personal, maybe even mundane moments seem vibrant, cinematic... important. Their lyrics about a trumpet player getting his car towed, sitting in traffic, or looking at clouds were running through my head and keeping me from overthinking what I wanted to say - keeping me from trying to make things overtly singable like I'd always done with Failure Machine.

So about a year ago, as Failure Machine was driving away from Elko after a few gigs, I sat in the back of the van scribbling some lyrics about a handful of people I've known and wrapped them all into this person named Carolyn (because I liked how it rhymed with "barellin'"). I sat on the lyrics for nearly a year before finally deciding to get a little high in my room and recording the music on my phone real quick. I've looked for every reason not to release it - so much so that this feels like I'm "ridding" myself of this tune. I don't like releasing singles and I see it as a failure that I couldn't write any more songs to pair with this.

But fuck it. It's fine.

about

Spencer Kilpatrick Big Water, Utah

The Utah-based singer-songwriter has an amazing, even intoxicating handle on pitch-perfect period strut, and a smoky, emotion-damaged croon that accents and accentuates it perfectly. While his voice sounds like a cross-hatching of a bluesy John Mayer and Bill Withers, his solo work, which has dribbled out online in fervent spasms, has called to mind contemporaries like Amos Lee.” - Justin Vellucci ... more
